Choosing a memory bear or other type of keepsake is about so much more than choosing an item.
It’s about choosing how you want to hold onto a memory.
Perhaps you have a wardrobe full of your baby’s first outfits that you simply can’t bring yourself to put away. Maybe you have a loved one’s favourite clothes after they have sadly passed away, and keeping those clothes close feels incredibly important. Or perhaps you have a wedding dress, school uniform, christening outfit or other treasured clothing that carries a special chapter of your life.
Whatever the story behind your fabric, choosing the right memory bear or keepsake is a very personal decision.
At Keepsakes by Memories & Wishes, I carefully transform precious clothing into handmade memory bears and keepsakes designed to help you hold onto those memories for years to come.
But with so many possibilities, how do you decide which keepsake is right for you?
Here are a few things I recommend considering…
1. Start with the memory you want to preserve.
Before thinking about the shape, size or design, think about the story behind the clothing.
What does it mean to you?
Is it connected to:
- 👶 A baby’s first outfits or precious early days
- 💕 A child’s milestones and growing-up years
- 💍 A wedding or special anniversary
- 🎓 A school or university chapter
- 🤍 A loved one who has sadly passed away
- 🐾 A much-loved pet
- 👨👩👧👦 A special family memory
- 🎂 A birthday or significant milestone
- ❤️ An important chapter of your life.
Sometimes the clothing itself tells you what kind of keepsake feels right.
A favourite shirt might make a beautiful traditional memory bear. Several baby outfits could become a collection of smaller keepsakes. A mixture of clothing from different stages of a child’s life might be perfect for a larger keepsake that brings those memories together.
There really isn’t one “right” answer.
2. Think about how you would like to display or use your keepsake.
One of the lovely things about handmade keepsakes is that they don’t have to be tucked away in a box.
Think about where you would like your finished keepsake to live.
Would you like something you can:
🧸 Hold and occasionally cuddle?
A memory bear or one of my other soft keepsake animals can become a comforting physical reminder of someone or something very precious.
🛏️ Display on a bed or chair?
A cushion or larger keepsake can become part of your home while quietly carrying a very special story.
👶 Keep in a nursery or child’s bedroom?
A baby or childhood clothing keepsake can become a beautiful reminder of those precious early years.
❤️ Keep close during times of grief?
A memorial bear or another personal keepsake can provide a tangible connection to someone who is no longer here.
Sometimes the best keepsake is simply the one that feels natural to have close by.
3. Choose a keepsake that suits the amount of clothing you have.
Don’t worry if you don’t have a huge amount of fabric.
A single treasured item can sometimes be enough to create something incredibly meaningful, while a larger collection of clothing gives you more possibilities.
For example, you might have:
- One favourite shirt belonging to Dad
- Several baby grows and sleepsuits
- A collection of school uniforms
- Wedding or special occasion clothing
- Clothes belonging to a loved one
- A mixture of garments from different family members.
When you contact me, we can look at what you have and talk through what might work best. I also offer boucle fabric which can be used as accents for your keepsake, such as a bears face and footpads.
The clothing doesn’t need to be perfect either…
Small marks, signs of wear and familiar fabrics can actually be part of what makes a garment so special. After all, these aren’t ordinary pieces of clothing; they’re pieces of someone’s story.
4. Consider the style of keepsake that feels most personal.
My memory bears can be made in different styles, including Traditional, Contemporary and Comfort designs.
You might prefer the classic appearance of a traditional teddy bear, something more modern and characterful, or a softer comfort-style keepsake.
I also create other keepsake animals, including foxes and lions, as well as cushions, hearts and other little treasures.
For baby clothing, I can also create birth-weighted keepsakes from suitable garments, helping to preserve that very special number alongside the clothing itself.
Sometimes a particular animal or shape simply feels right for the person or memory you’re celebrating.
5. Think about the little details.
Once you’ve chosen the type of keepsake, it’s often the smaller details that make it truly yours.
You might want to include:
🎀 A particular ribbon colour
🧵 An embroidered name
💕 A special date
🌸 Appliqué
📝 A meaningful message
🧸 A particular colour of eyes or nose
👨👩👧👦 A photo locket of your loved one
💖 A small pocket or special detail from the original clothing.
These details don’t have to be elaborate.
Sometimes a favourite button, pocket, piece of embroidery or familiar pattern is enough to make your keepsake instantly recognisable.
I particularly love incorporating little details from the original clothing wherever possible, because they help keep the connection to the person and the memories behind it.
6. Don’t forget that the fabric itself carries memories.
This is perhaps the most important part.
When you send me clothing to transform, I’m not simply working with fabric.
I’m working with memories.
The feel of a favourite jumper.
The pattern on a child’s first outfit.
A shirt that was worn on countless family occasions.
A dress connected to a wedding day.
A piece of clothing that still reminds you of someone you miss.
That’s why I take great care with every garment entrusted to me.
I’ve been sewing for over 40 years, and my experience allows me to carefully consider how each piece of clothing can be used to create something beautiful while preserving as much of its character as possible.
7. Choose a keepsake maker you feel you can trust.
This is particularly important when your clothing has sentimental value.
Once the fabric has been cut, it can’t simply be replaced.
So it’s perfectly reasonable to take your time choosing the person who will create your keepsake.
Look at their experience, examples of their work, customer reviews and the way they communicate with you.
Most importantly, choose someone you feel comfortable entrusting with your memories.
For me, this is one of the most important parts of what I do.
I understand that sending treasured clothing away can feel daunting, particularly when it belonged to someone who has passed away, so I also offer a drop-off and collection service.
I want you to feel reassured that your clothing is being treated with the same care and respect that I would give to my own precious memories.
There doesn’t have to be one perfect choice.
If you’re struggling to decide, please don’t feel that you need to know exactly what you want before getting in touch.
Sometimes a conversation about the clothing and the story behind it is the easiest way to work out what feels right.
You might initially think you want a memory bear, only to discover that another keepsake would better suit the clothing you have.
Or you may have enough fabric for several keepsakes and decide to create something for different members of the family.
There is no formula.
Your memory bear or other type of keepsake should reflect your memories, your relationship and your story.
A keepsake isn’t just something you make; it’s something you keep.
I believe the most meaningful memory bears and keepsakes are the ones that make you stop for a moment.
The ones you recognise immediately.
The ones that make you smile, perhaps shed a tear, or remember a person, place or moment that means everything to you.
That’s why I don’t see my work simply as sewing.
I see it as turning your precious clothes into treasured memory bears and keepsakes, carefully preserving a little piece of the story they hold.
